7.9% — muscle growth with estrogen therapy plus training — versus 3.9% with training alone

CAPTION
Same program. Same twelve weeks. Different results.

Researchers randomized 31 early postmenopausal women to supervised resistance training three times a week, with either a transdermal estrogen patch or a placebo patch. Thigh muscle cross-sectional area grew 7.9% in the estrogen group and 3.9% in the placebo group.

Muscle size was measured by MRI at two points on the thigh, not estimated. Both groups trained identically: three supervised sessions a week, 36 sessions total, 100% adherence.
